dot require airlines pay bumped passengers more

DOT wants to make airlines pay passengers more when they're bumped off their flight, allow passengers to cancel reservations within 24 hours of booking with no penalty and require better disclosure of fees and surcharges.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced new airline passenger protections that will require airlines to provide consumers involuntarily bumped from flights with greater compensation

Today’s rule doubles the amount of money passengers are eligible to be compensated for in the event they are involuntarily bumped from an oversold flight. Currently, bumped passengers are entitled to cash compensation equal to the value of their tickets, up to $400, if the airline is able to get them to their destination within a short period of time (i.e., within 1 to 2 hours of their originally scheduled arrival time for domestic flights and 1 to 4 hours of their originally scheduled arrival time for international flights). Bumped passengers are currently entitled to double the price of their tickets, up to $800, if they are delayed for a lengthy period of time (i.e., over two hours after their originally scheduled arrival time for domestic flights and over 4 hours after their originally scheduled arrival time for international flights). Under the new rule, bumped passengers subject to short delays will receive compensation equal to double the price of their tickets up to $650, while those subject to longer delays would receive payments of four times the value of their tickets, up to $1,300. Inflation adjustments will be made to those compensation limits every two years.

us airlines must refund fee after lost Baggage

You've already paid $15, $20, even $35 to check your bag on a flight. Then the airline loses it. You don't even get your money back.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced new airline passenger protections that will require airlines to reimburse passengers for bag fees if their bags are lost, provide consumers involuntarily bumped from flights with greater compensation, expand the current ban on lengthy tarmac delays, and disclose hidden fees. The rulemaking finalized today builds on passenger protections issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation in December 2009, which prohibited U.S. airlines operating domestic flights from permitting an aircraft to remain on the tarmac for more than three hours, with exceptions for safety, security and air traffic control related-reasons. The DOT rule also required U.S. airlines to provide basic services such as access to lavatories and water in the event of extended tarmac delays.
Lost Bags and Bag Fees. Airlines will now be required to refund any fee for carrying a bag if the bag is lost. Airlines will also be required to apply the same baggage allowances and fees for all segments of a trip, including segments with interline and code share partners. Airlines are already required to compensate passengers for reasonable expenses for loss, damage or delay in the carriage of passenger baggage.

Full Disclosure of Additional Fees. DOT require Airlines to prominently disclose all potential fees on their websites, including but not limited to fees for baggage, meals, canceling or changing reservations, or advanced or upgraded seating. In addition, airlines and ticket agents will be required to refer passengers both before and after purchase to up-to-date baggage fee information, and to include all government taxes and fees in every advertised price. Previously, government taxes and fees were not required to be included in the up-front fare quotation.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has implemented a series of rules aimed at protecting passengers. Last year, the government limited how long passengers can sit on planes during ground delays to three hours.

Under existing rules, if luggage is never found or is damaged, passengers can ask for a fee refund as part of their lost-property claim. But if a bag is simply delayed, a passenger is out of luck.

Two airlines provide a credit — although not a cash refund. Alaska Airlines offers a $20 credit for future travel or 2,000 frequent flier miles if luggage is not at the claim area 20 minutes after the plane parks at the gate. Delta gives a $25 credit for each bag if it doesn't arrive within 12 hours. Both airlines require a claim form.

Airlines prefer handing out vouchers instead of cash. The credits mean that a passenger will either bring them additional business or just never redeem the voucher, costing the airline nothing. Airlines often offer vouchers when they look for volunteers to give up seats on overbooked flights.

U.S. airlines lose bags at about half the rate they did in 2007, before the implementation of checked luggage fees. People are carrying on their bags, making the airlines' job easier. Still, last year, more than 2 million bags didn't arrive on the same flight as their owner.

"Passengers are paying $25 to have their bags carried but they aren't getting any better service. The airlines are just using it as a way to increase revenue," says Nick Gates, who oversees baggage products for SITA, an aviation technology provider.

Southwest $40 oneway tickets fall sale

Southwest Airlines has joined other low-cost airlines in cutting prices for some seats this fall, after the peak summer travel season.

Southwest would sell some seats on flights up to 450 miles oneway tickets for $40 each way to mark its 40th anniversary. The airline and its AirTran Airways subsidiary will charge $80 each way on flights up to 1,250 miles and $120 each way on longer flights.

Separately, JetBlue Airways is dropping its "all-you-can-jet" promotion that allowed pass holders to take unlimited flights for a month in the fall.
AirTran and JetBlue launched sales for fall travel last week. Airlines expect a busy summer with planes nearly full, but demand usually drops off during the fall.

JetBlue told past buyers on Monday that it wouldn't run the deal in 2011, but it offered them 30 percent off for one round trip this fall. The passes sold out quickly at $599 in 2009 and $499 to $699 in 2010.

The new Southwest and AirTran sale ends Thursday night and covers travel from Aug. 23 through Nov. 16 from dozens of cities. The deals carry a lot of restrictions, including no travel on Fridays and Sundays and blackout dates around Labor Day. Seats are "limited" and might not be offered on every flight.

Tom Parsons, CEO of travel website Bestfares.com, said airlines have been cutting prices on some routes to as little as $19 this year. "All of them have had prices under $40 at some point this year, but not on this many cities," he said.

Parsons had predicted an anniversary sale from Southwest, but he said the inclusion of AirTran in the deal made the sale better than he had expected. He said other airlines would be forced to match Southwest prices rather than risk losing customers.

Travel Insurance Aids Travelers Stranded by Volcanic ash

Ash from volcanic eruptions in Chile prompted airlines in Australia to ground
domestic services and flights to New Zealand.
With the news that UK airline passengers are facing massive disruption after an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland grounded planes, AA Travel Insurance are today highlighting the importance in taking out travel insurance at the time of booking your travel arrangements.

Following advice from the Met Office, the National Air Traffic Service (NATS) has suspended all flights at london Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick, as Met Office experts warn the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud could be sufficient to jam aircraft engines.

Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand, meanwhile, have avoided cancelling many flights by changing flight paths, a step Qantas and some other airlines have been unwilling to take.
Air Canada and Jazz say that any of their flights from Canada to Buenos Aires may be delayed or cancelled because of the ash.

For many though, travel insurance has eased the pain of cancelled flights, delayed travel, and trips interrupted.

Despite the bizarre nature of this event, travel insurance can and does provide very real protection for a situation that no one could have predicted.

Trip Cancellation Package Policies, the most comprehensive type of travel insurance plans, offer the greatest benefits for travelers forced to cancel their trips prior to departure as well as those whose travels have been significantly interrupted by this event. Additionally, these policies include coverage for the travel delays that are heavily impacting travelers everywhere and provide reimbursement for hotel accommodations, meals, and transportation needs due to cancelled flights caused by the volcanic event. "Coverage varies by company and plan however," adds Grace, "so for best results, know the details of your policy and/or call us for more information."

"Though it's not yet clear how long these issues will continue to impact travel, there are options for those with trips commencing in the near future as well." Available from most insurance providers, "Cancel For Any Reason" is an optional benefit that empowers travelers to cancel trips for any reason of their choosing up to two days prior to departure. "Cancel For Any Reason" policies vary by company and not all provide coverage for this specific event; be sure to confirm this event is covered and purchase your plan within 15 days of your initial trip deposit.

If you have questions about travel insurance benefits and the international flight crisis call InsureMyTrip.com at (800) 487-4722 to speak with a licensed insurance Customer Care representative or visit www.insuremytrip.com today. The Customer Care team is available by phone and online seven days a week, 365 days a year, Monday through Friday 7 AM to Midnight, Saturday 9 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 11 AM to 6 PM ET.

Voyages Jules Verne enhance tours in amman

Voyages Jules Verne has announced the introduction of scheduled flights to its popular programme of escorted tours in Jordan.

Voyages Jules Verne's 2011/12 Jordan holidays programme offers a choice of four itinerates including Petra to the Pyramids, Jordan's Red Sea & Petra, Discover Jordon and Grand Tour of Jordon.
Replacing the charter arrangement from Gatwick to Aqaba, clients will now fly from Heathrow to Amman with British Midland International (bmi), enjoying a number of additional benefits that include Saturday departures, an extended season (which means a wider choice of departures over a longer peiord), free connecting bmi flights from Manchester (supplement for other regional airports) and an upgraded flight option where customers can fly in even greater comfort in Business Class (additional cost).

Travelling on scheduled flights will also extend the duration of each itinerary, enabling Voyages Jules Verne clients to spend an extra night in Jordan, staying at an additional location. For example, VJV's 15-night Grand Tour of Jordan itinerary now includes a stay at the luxurious Evason Ma'in Hot Springs & Six Senses Spa as well as an upgrade to its standard accommodation in Tala Bay, which is now the five-star Radisson Blu Resort. The eight-night Discover Jordan tour now features a night at the Dead Sea - staying either at the four-star Holiday Inn Resort or the new five-star Mövenpick Resort & Spa (additional cost).

Whilst it would be understandable to expect all these extra benefits to incur an additional cost, Voyages Jules Verne has managed to maintain prices across its Jordan programme - reinforcing the company's reputation for offering the best possible value to its clients. And there's even better news on the budgeting front in the form of an Early Booking Offer as customers can now reserve their place on a Jordan tour by 30 June 2011 and enjoy a £50 pp reduction on advertised prices.

2012 promises to be a big year for Jordan, as it celebrates the 200th anniversary of the re-discovery of Petra by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt as well as the 50th anniversary of the filming of Lawrence of Arabia. And, with the country currently experiencing a temporary drop in tourism, there really is no better time to see Jordan 'while the tourist crowds are away'.

Voyages Jules Verne offers tours to a number of exotic worldwide destinations including Italy tours, India tours, Egypt tours and China holidays.

The tradition of innovation and creativity is still alive today and evidenced, amongst others, by a unique direct charter operation to Aqaba, stays at a convent in Rome, exclusive use of royal steamers for Nile River cruises, and a series of special events exclusively arranged for VJV clients.

United add chicgo to Rapid City SD flight

United to add third daily flight to ORD this summer Seasonal schedule also includes four Saturday flights

United Airlines, through its United Express affiliate SkyWest Airlines, flies one daily round-trip flight between Rapid City South Dakota and Chicago-O’Hare airport. In recent years the airline has added a second daily flight to Chicago during the busy summer travel season. This year, however, the airline has opted to further expand its summer service between Rapid City and United’s largest hub, Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
United Airlines has expanded the summer schedule on its Rapid City-to-Chicago route to three flights per day Sunday through Friday, and four flights on Saturdays. Year around,

Beginning June 9, United Express will schedule three daily departures from Rapid City Regional Airport to ORD Chicago-O’Hare. Planes will take off at 6:00 a.m., 11:31 a.m. and 1:58 p.m. The flights will land at RAP at 11:06 a.m., 1:17 p.m. and 9:54 p.m. The fourth Saturday flight will arrive at 4:24 p.m. and depart at 5:03 p.m. The new midday flight will likely be aboard an Embraer ERJ 145 or a Canadair CRJ 200, jet aircraft with seating for up to 50 passengers. From IAD, the nation’s second-busiest airport,

United offers connecting service to many of its 372 national and international destinations. “O’Hare International Airport is one of the largest hubs in the world, passengers can fly just about anywhere from there,” said Cameron Humphres, airport executive director. “With this addition, passengers will have even more options.”

What is really gratifying, Humphres said, is that passengers are showing their support by buying tickets and taking flights. That support results in increased service and competitive fares, which in turn boosts demand. That kind of momentum is good for airlines and good for passengers, Humphres said.

jetblue baggage allowance for military personnel

low cost airlines jetblue increased checked baggage allowance for military personnel. Civilians on JetBlue always get a first checked bag for free (size and weight restrictions apply), but our brave men and women in uniform now get five times that!

Effective immediately, active duty military in uniform or with travel orders (as well as their dependents on orders) from the United States, Colombia, The Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Mexico, or any of the dozen countries jetblue operate in throughout the Americas are welcome to check FIVE free bags per traveler (that’s three more than the two freebies we previously allowed for soldiers). In addition, JetBlue will waive overweight and oversize restrictions for these checked bags.

We’re pleased to extend this simple courtesy to our service men and women and honored to continue our longstanding support for the military community through partnerships with organizations like Fisher House and the Wounded Warrior Project

Among U.S. soldiers, the satisfaction level with Delta Air Lines may have been pretty low last week after a group of warriors returning from Afghanistan posted an online video complaining that they were charged to bring a fourth piece of baggage on a Delta flight.

Two Army staff sergeants shown on the video said Delta charged them $200 each to check a fourth bag, totaling $2,800 for an entire unit of returning soldiers.

Like many other airlines, Delta has a contract with the U.S. military to transport soldiers who are traveling on military orders. They can check up to three bags for free if they are traveling in economy seats or four bags if they travel in first or business class.

Once the video was posted online, Delta changed its policy on checked bags. It will now allow soldiers and their dependents to check up to four bags for free in the economy section or five bags when they fly first or business class.

qatar airways fly to Bucharest Henri Coanda airport

Qatar Airways has launched direct flights to Romania’s capital city from doha, which had a bumper 2010 launching 10 new destinations and inducting 19 new aircraft into its fleet.

The route is operated with an Airbus A320 in a two-class configuration. Featuring 12 seats in Business Class and up to 132 seats in Economy, the aircraft offers passengers seatback TV screens giving them the opportunity to watch programmes at their leisure. Regardless of class of travel, passengers can enjoy the next generation interactive onboard entertainment system with a choice of more than 700 audio and video on demand options.

Following the touchdown of flight QR943 at Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport, the aircraft was welcomed by a traditional water salute and met by senior airport officials and local dignitaries. The flight later continued its journey to the Hungarian capital Budapest.

The DOH OTP schedules with effect from 17th January 2011 are:

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays

Depart Doha QR943 at 0815 hrs, arrive Bucharest OTP 1220 hrs

Depart Bucharest OTP QR944 at 1825 hrs, arrive Doha 2355 hrs

“International passenger traffic from Asia and the Middle East continues to increase, and creating new connections such as Bucharest via our network hub in Doha, facilitates growth for Qatar Airways and for travel in and out of Romania to these regions.”

General Manager of Bucharest Airports Company, Tudor Jidav, said: “I am very pleased with Qatar Airways’ entry into the Romanian market and I thank the airline for the trust they have put in Henri Coanda Airport. These new flights will allow our region to increase economic and tourism ties with the Middle East and even onwards to Asia Pacific. Romanians will now be several hours closer to Middle Eastern and Asian holiday destinations.”

Bucharest becomes the airline’s 96th route and the first new destination of 2011. Qatar Airways is the only Gulf carrier and Five Star-ranked airline flying to Romania, with the airline’s four weekly non-stop services continuing on to Budapest in neighbouring Hungary – the carrier’s 97th network point.

Qatar Airways start Shiraz doha flights

Qatar Airways has launched nonstop flights to the southern Iranian city of Shiraz, marking the first of three route start-ups this month.

The airline began twice-weekly services from its Doha hub to Shahid Dastghaib International Airport in Shiraz. The carrier already serves Iran’s capital Tehran twice-daily with a further five-flights-a-week to the northern city of Mashad.
Depart Doha QR496 at 0205 hrs, arrive Shiraz 0445 hrs

Depart Shiraz QR497 at 0620 hrs, arrive Doha 0600 hrs

The latest route further enhances Qatar Airways’ commitment to Iran, where it first began operating services to the country in 2004 with the launch of the Tehran route, followed a year later by flights to Mashad. The Shiraz route is operated with an Airbus A320 in a two-class configuration of 12 seats in Business and 132 in Economy.

Over the next few weeks, Qatar Airways’ expansion continues relentlessly, extending its global reach to Europe with the launch of flights to Venice from June 15 and Montreal – its first move into Canada – effective June 29.
“As the route to Shiraz develops, we will also look to add frequency and capacity to improve connectivity even further,” added Al Baker.

Shiraz is home to over 1.5 million people and is one of the largest cities in Iran. As the capital city of the Fars Province, Shiraz is the economic centre of southern Iran.

United lax to Hilo Hawai direct flights

United Airlines started daily direct flights between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Hilo, Hawai‘i (ITO). In addition, United will begin once-weekly nonstop service to Hilo from its San Francisco hub beginning June 11. The flights, operated by Continental Airlines, are the only nonstop service to Hilo from the U.S. mainland and complement the airline’s existing service to four other cities in Hawai‘i: Honolulu, Kahului, Kona and Lihue.

Continental B737 airplane operated the route California to Hawai, which departs Los Angeles at 5 p.m. and arrives in Hilo at 7:40 p.m. The return flight departs Hilo at 8:55 p.m. and arrives in Los Angeles at 5:15 a.m. the following day.

United airlines fly to Hawai from its hubs at Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Houston, Chicago and New York/Newark – provides more mainline service to the islands than any other U.S. carrier. Continental will utilize a Boeing 737-800 aircraft on the route, with 16 seats in first class and 144 seats in economy.

“Together, United and Continental have served Hawai‘i for more than six decades, and this new nonstop service provides our customers with more extensive access to the islands,” said Jim Compton, executive vice president and chief revenue officer of United Continental Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: UAL). “We are excited to strengthen our presence in the Hawai‘ian community and are proud to be the only carrier to offer nonstop service to Hilo from the mainland.”
“We are proud to host United Airlines’ direct flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco,” said County of Hawai‘i Mayor Billy Kenoi. “It means we can offer our visitors true Hilo hospitality and show them premier attractions such as Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and the world-famous annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival. We believe our guests will love Hilo as much as we do and will want to return.”

We are extremely excited about being able to expand our network in 2011 with new service to Chicago,” said Tony Tyler, Cathay Pacific’s chief executive. “As Hong Kong’s home carrier, we are pleased to link these two great cities together to meet the demand for both business and leisure travel.”

"Chicago is a global city with an international vibe that works hard to show its influence beyond its borders and is an international gateway for cargo and passengers," said Mayor Richard M. Daley. "We've worked hard to attract new businesses and industries to Chicago and our position as a transportation hub and our efforts to rebound from a global recession is being noticed on an international level. Establishing additional daily air service between Chicago and Hong Kong helps continue to expand economic relations for these cities."
