charter flights Houston to Luanda West Africa

Atlas Air, a new airline at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), launched a premium passenger private charter service on behalf of the United States-Africa Energy Association (USAEA).

The service, known as the "Houston Express," has been made possible by a commercial arrangement with USAEA's agent, SonAir-Servico Aereo, S.A. (SonAir), an Angolan company.

Atlas Air is operating three weekly nonstop flights between IAH and Luanda, Angola. The flights depart Houston at 11:00 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the 14-hour, 20 minute eastbound journey, returning from Luanda on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with a flight time of 15 hours and five minutes.

The newly customized Boeing 747-400 aircraft, provided by SonAir's parent company, features 10 First Class, 143 Business Class and 36 Economy Class seats with the latest in-flight entertainment and comfort.

"The Houston Airport System welcomes Atlas Air to Bush Intercontinental Airport to operate charter flights to Luanda, Angola, and West Africa from Houston," says Mario C. Diaz, director of aviation. "We are excited to be the global gateway for Houston-based firms that benefit from the new Houston Express."

"This is an important moment for our company as we leverage our record of reliability and operational excellence as the largest Boeing 747-400 freighter provider in the world to introduce outsourced charter passenger service," said William J. Flynn, President and Chief Executive Officer of AAWW. "We are delighted to work closely and cooperatively with SonAir to make the Houston Express a world-class, comfortable experience."

SonAir is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sonangol Group, the multinational energy company of Angola and a member of USAEA.

USAEA's members include many of the leading U.S. energy companies involved in the exploration and development of petroleum resources in West Africa. Luanda is the capital and largest city of Angola.

Located on Angola's coast with the Atlantic Ocean, Luanda is both Angola's chief seaport and administrative center.

united move to Terminal C at IAH Airport

United Airlines has now moved all flight operations from the Terminal A facility to Terminal C at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport IHA, putting them in closer proximity to their Star Alliance partner, Continental Airlines.

“This is one of those moves that makes perfect sense from an operational standpoint,” says Ian Wadsworth, chief commercial officer for the Houston Airport System (HAS). “The Star Alliance has the two airlines working closely together and now the logistics are going to reflect that partnership.”

This accessibility is especially important for those passengers who are following a Star Alliance itinerary which calls for them to not only switch planes in Houston, but also switch airlines.

In the past, those passengers had to leave the secured side of Terminal A, then make their way over to Terminal C before proceeding through another security checkpoint in order to reach their second aircraft.

Now that the two airlines are operating in the same terminal, those passengers can simply walk from one gate to another, within the same building.

It’s a layout which offers greater convenience for United Airlines’ customers, but making sure that those customers are aware of the move prior to their arrival can be a challenge.

That’s why the airlines involved and members of the Houston Airport System have been meeting together for several weeks, in an effort to ensure that customers know exactly where the new amenities will be located.

The outreach effort has involved dozens of signs installed at key locations, alerting customers to the fact that ticket counters, baggage claim offices, and the planes themselves have all been moved to the new location at Terminal C.

The move also required a tremendous amount of cooperation between the airlines, HAS staff and federal agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Houston Airport new x-ray Scanning Equipment

The latest technological advances in passenger screening will soon be on display and in operation at both commercial airports in Houston, according to an announcement from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

The new screening method is called “Advanced Imaging Technology” (AIT) and it’s already begun to arrive in Houston. The machines’ arrival is part of a nationwide allocation program overseen by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The program calls for 39 different airport facilities to receive the AIT technology in 2010.

Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is scheduled to receive a total of 18 AIT machines, while an additional 6 are slated for installation at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU).

United States Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee was on hand at IAH when the news broke that Houston would be part of the latest wave of distribution, and she says the selection of her hometown makes perfect sense.

“Houston is an international city, intricately connected to the global economy and the movement of goods and people around the globe,” said the Congresswoman. “Unfortunately, this also exposes Houston to the risks associated with a large and active transit hub. Implementation of AIT at our airports ensures that we keep our city and our local citizens secure as we move into the future.”

TSA administrator John Pistole, who was in Houston recently visiting IAH, used the opportunity to lay out a broad agenda for the many TSA employees who had gathered to hear his remarks.

“We intend to have TSA operating as a national security, counter-terrorism-line of defense, using the latest intelligence and technology to prevent bad people from doing bad things,” said Pistole. “My second priority is to engage and support the workforce and third is to engage external shareholders and the traveling public who have input on how we do our business.”

Once the AIT machines are fully operational, Houston passengers will be asked to enter the unit with their feet slightly spread apart and their arms raised overhead. While the customer is in this specified position, an x-ray type image is taken which allows TSA staff to better detect threats such as weapons, explosives or other objects which may be concealed under layers of clothing.

Trained screeners review the x-ray type image in a separate room, but TSA officials stress that no image is ever stored for any reason and each passenger can opt for a different method of screening, should they feel uncomfortable with the AIT units.

Houston is now largest hub to united airline

Continental and United Airlines have completely navigated their way through the merging process and created the world’s largest airline.

the merged airline will begin functioning as an individual carrier, combining the two reservation systems, replacing signage and addressing a host of other issues that come with a merger of this size. No specific date for the big switch has been announced yet, but on “Customer Day One” all flights operated by the carrier will fly under the United name.

The final stage of the merging process mainly addresses behind-the-scenes issues, such as combined training programs, collective bargaining for unionized employees and obtaining a single operating certificate from the FAA.

The host of changes will be a key point of interest for millions of fliers in the local market, since Houston is the largest hub for Continental Airlines and the two merging carriers handle almost 87 percent of the customers flying in and out of George Bush Intercontinental Airport IAH.

Continental chairman and CEO Jeff Smisek, who will serve as the top executive for the new company, has already laid out a general roadmap for the merging process.

“We are delighted to announce the successful completion of this merger. With great people, an unparalleled global network, the best new aircraft order book among U.S. network carriers and a commitment to superior products and services, United is well positioned for a bright future,” Smisek said. “I look forward to working together with co-workers around the globe as we begin our journey to create the world’s leading airline that delivers best-in-class customer service, increased opportunities for employees, meaningful profitability and sustainable long-term value for our shareholders.”

Smisek and the rest of the United team will now turn their attention toward the transition. It’s a process that involves three distinct phases, the legal merger of the two companies, the “Customer Day One” program, when passengers see only one airline and the operational phase in which the two airlines operate under one certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Smisek says that customers of both airlines will not notice a dramatic difference in day to day operations until the spring of next year. For the next several months, both airlines will continue to operate their own individual websites, ticket counters, aircraft and other aspects of their respective operations.

united Houston to Gunnison Crested Butte airport

united Continental Airlines offer seasonal air service this winter to its largest hub, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

The non-stop flight between Houston and Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) in Colorado is set to begin on Thursday, December 16, 2010 and will operate through Sunday, April 3, 2011. Gunnison is located just 30 miles from Crested Butte Mountain Resort, one of Colorado's most popular powdery slopes for alpine skiing and snowboarding, a perfect vacation spot for winter.

The IAH – GUC service will depart Houston at 11:40 a.m. and arrive in Gunnison at 1:25 p.m. The return flight will depart Gunnison at 2:15 p.m. and arrive in Houston at 5:35 p.m.

Flights will operate daily except between January 4 and February 16, 2011, when the service will operate Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The flight is scheduled to accommodate convenient connections for customers traveling from points throughout Texas, the eastern United States, Mexico and South America.

"The thought of a snowy mountain escape is especially appealing after a long hot summer," said Jim Ferea, Continental's managing director scheduling. "Our new Houston to Gunnison flight joins our growing list of ski destinations in Colorado that are easily reached through convenient connections at our Houston hub."

“This announcement benefits Houston in two significant ways,” says Mario C. Diaz, Houston Airport System director of aviation. “Houstonians will enjoy non-stop access to the natural beauty of the Gunnison area, and the Houston Airport System (HAS) will benefit from additional customers, due to the fact that Continental Airlines will be funneling much of the traffic flow through its Houston hub.”
In addition to Gunnison, Continental operates winter service to several world-class ski areas in Colorado including Vail, Telluride and Steamboat Springs.

The company also provides service to popular ski resorts in Utah, New Mexico, Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec and a number of destinations in the Northeastern United States.

Singapore Airlines daily flights to IAH

For the second time this year, Singapore Airlines is expanding its schedule in regards to the direct service available between Singapore and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

Singapore Airlines is currently offering five flights per week between the two cities, but on October 31, 2010, the operation will be expanded to accommodate daily service, with flights arriving and departing Monday through Sunday.

The route, which offers passengers non-stop service to Moscow with continuing service to Singapore, will keep the daily schedule in place until at least March 26, 2011.The Singapore Airlines service features the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which is capable of accommodating 278 passengers.

“The partnership between Singapore Airlines and the Houston market has been incredibly successful,” says Genaro Peña, director of air service development for the Houston Airport System (HAS). “When the service was first launched, we were confident that it would succeed but the passenger totals so far have truly exceeded our expectations.” The non-stop flight was inaugurated in 2008 and since that time, has enjoyed a steady increase in the number of passengers taking advantage of the service.

At the time of the launch, Singapore Airlines’ executive vice president Huang Cheng Eng said there was definitely reason to feel confident about chances for success. “Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States, and a key energy center,” Huang said. “Its strategic location on the Gulf Coast makes it an ideal gateway for the Southern USA to Singapore and Southeast Asia.”

The emergence and success of Singapore Airlines has certainly helped the international passenger totals at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

The deal experts at Travel Ticker announced Where To Go Now & How Guide. using their insider information to reveal the top destinations for north america travellers that offer the best overall experience and value for each season. To form the list, Travel Ticker will look at local trends like weather and tourist traffic, as well as entertainment options, cultural experiences, and the available deals in each locale.

"Different destinations present both opportunities and challenges that depend on the time of year, and it's difficult to keep track of all that information," said Angela Lyda, Senior Editor of Travel Ticker. "For example, some off-seasons still have great weather, and some peak seasons still have amazing prices. We created our Where To Go Now & How Guide to highlight the best places and to share insights that travelers may not have found on their own."

Below are the top five destinations in Travel Ticker's july to September 2011 Where To Go Now & How Guide:

1. Chicago – Peak season, but with big value.

Why Now: From the summer festivals, Wrigley Field bleacher seats, Millennium Park concerts, walking along Lake Michigan, to outdoor shopping and dining – it's no secret that Chicago is enjoyed to its fullest in the peak summer months. And with Chicago surrounded by numerous unique neighborhoods, there is plenty of this city to go around for each visitor.
Value: Hotel rates are higher in the july and august, but only by about $20-$30 compared to the off season. This makes the Windy City one of the most affordable "splurges" considering the big experiences that you can have. It's also tends to be one of the lower-priced big cities in the country to fly into as well. Hotel rates range from $99-$139.
How: 40% off Chicago hotel w/upgrade, breakfast + more -- $139+ – The Amalfi Hotel Chicago starts at $139 on select dates, June 29-September 9. Stay near the Magnificent Mile, plus get a complimentary room upgrade, breakfast, cocktails, & WiFi.

Why Now: north america summer is Peru's winter and off season, which equates to great travel values. The weather averages 65 degrees in Peru during the winter months, but is still pleasantly tropical in many places. There are also fewer tourists, so you can experience local culture to its fullest in spots like Machu Picchu, Lima, and the Inca ruins. For these reasons, now is the perfect time to fall in love with Peru.
Value: Save up to $200 per person on packages in summer and $300 per person by traveling in early September, as compared to the peak season.
How: Peruse this: $200 off a Peru excursion – Gate 1's 10-day trip includes a flight to Lima, hotels in 4 cities, transfers, breakfast & tours (including Machu Picchu) from $1,699*. Valid select dates, June 24-December 30.

3. Las Vegas – Off season, sizzling deals in an indoor city.

Why Now: Summer is Sin City's off season and yes, it is hot outside, but that's what the renowned pool facilities and air-conditioned restaurants and casinos are for. The off season is always a good time to take in the amazing nightlife, acclaimed shows, concerts and entertainment without the threat of high prices or sell-outs. Plus, hotels offer more incentives during summer in the form of complimentary extras for dining, entertainment and more.
Value: Save up to 30% on rates compared to peak season and use that savings for a show!
How: Vegas Strip stay with club passes + VIP perks -- from $119 – South Beach style and nightlife on the Vegas Strip. Tropicana Las Vegas is offering stays from just $119 that include VIP passes for the chic, new Club Nikki and Nikki Beach, and late checkout. Travel now-September 30.

4. Myrtle Beach – Peak season and very affordable beach option.

Why Now: While summer is Myrtle Beach's peak season, it's still a great budget-friendly destination. The weather is much more enjoyable than other times of year, averaging in the low 70s, and the city really comes alive in the summer months with live entertainment, water sports, dining, shopping and plenty of beach to go around. In addition, many rooms are studio-style and include kitchenettes, so it's a great money-saving destination for families.
Value: Rates range from $39-$69 midweek, and $69-$99 on weekends.
How: 35% off Myrtle Beach resort w/waterpark & breakfast, $119+ – 300-ft lazy river, 14 pools, 1 low rate. The beachfront Landmark Resort in Myrtle Beach offers all that, plus a water park and daily breakfast for two from $119 midweek, June 26-August 6. Weekends are just $10 more.

5. Guatemala – Off season, adventurous and budget-friendly.

This makes for the perfect time to explore Guatemala City and Chichicastenango (try saying that three times fast), tour Antigua, the ancient church of Santo Tomas, or go on an excursion to the picturesque Lake Atitlan.
Value: Save up to $350 per person on packages, as compared to the peak season.
How: Guatemala tour w/air, hotel, excursions, & breakfast, $599+* – A complete Central America trip -- an exclusive $50 discount. Get a round-trip flight to Guatemala, 4 nights in 2 cities, transfers, breakfast, and tours from $599*. Valid select dates, June 21-December 27.

mobile phones Charging at Los Angeles airport

Los Angeles World Airports has launched charging stations in all terminals at Los Angeles Airport (LAX), allowing travelers the convenience of free electrical re-charging of their mobile phones, laptop computer, ipad and other personal electronics.

"Samsung Mobile Charging Stations are designed to give travelers an easy way to keep their phones, laptops and other gadgets charged while on-the-go," said Bill Ogle, Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung Mobile. "With the summer travel season in full-swing, we expect the charging stations to be a big a hit at one of nation's busiest airports, Los Angeles International."

Fifty-one 8-1/2-foot-tall, pole-like charging stations have been installed throughout the boarding areas in Terminals 1 through 8 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal. The Samsung Mobile Charging Stations have four outlets per station, allowing multiple travelers to re-charge their electronic devices. They are designed to re-charge personal electronics designed for U.S. voltage (i.e., 120 volts). The electrical re-charging stations are designed with a small shelf to hold electronic equipment.
"If you look around a crowded plane now, you see more passengers with laptops and other personal electronic devices than a decade ago," said Pete Skarzynski, Samsung Mobile senior vice president. "To celebrate Samsung's 10th anniversary, we are sponsoring the Samsung Mobile Charging Stations for travelers' use at LAX free of charge."

"As the number of personal electronic equipment has exploded during the past few years, both business and leisure travelers have requested more electrical outlets in our boarding gate areas to recharge equipment while awaiting their flight departures," said Patricia Tubert, LAWA Deputy Executive Director of Real Estate and Economic Development.
"This new service is part of our continued commitment to implementing customer service initiatives to meet travelers' needs."

Samsung Telecommunications America is sponsoring the new service as part of the airport's in-terminal advertising program. LAWA is providing the electricity for the charging stations. "JCDecaux designed and produced the concept of the Samsung Mobile Charging Stations which will provide a unique service to over 60 million travelers annually at LAX, as well as valuable brand exposure for Samsung.

charging stations at Greenville Airport

The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport has recently added two personal electronic devices charging stations to the terminal’s “A” concourse.
“These days everyone has a laptop computer, iPod, Mobile phone, netbook or electronic book reader,” said GSP Vice President and COO Kevin Howell. “…our goal is to include customer service amenities for passengers that will add convenience to their visit to GSP.”

The prototype stations have a total of six outlets each with two three-prong power sockets on each outlet and enough countertop space to accommodate leisure and business travelers. The stations will be observed during the next few months to determine how they are being utilized and if the design will withstand the growth in GSP terminal traffic. “If the stations are as functional, durable and convenient as we believe and there is positive feedback, then we plan to strategically build five or six charging stations throughout the terminal,” said Howell.
The charging stations were designed by RS&H, and constructed by SYS Constructors and Satterfield Woodworking, Inc.
